Here’s the thing, golf just isn’t for everyone. But, TopGolf isn’t your grandpa’s driving range and – while helpful – it doesn’t take any actual skill in golf to enjoy it. In fact, the company reports that more than half of guests are non-golfers. It also isn’t as expensive as you may think – especially if you plan it as a group date. By keeping an eye on TopGolf deals near you and taking advantage of their great drink offerings, this fun budget date idea is sure to be a hole in one! (Or in this case, a shot to the back net).
What is TopGolf & How is it Different from Traditional Golf?
If you’ve ever been driving down a highway and noticed a giant structure with a net surrounding it, that’s probably a TopGolf location. While it may share some similarities with a driving range, it is far more technologically advanced and much more fun! Plus, they include the clubs with the price of the game. So, no rental fee or expensive golfing gear to buy. Even kids are allowed to play (although, ideally you leave them at home for your date)!
Unlike traditional golf, the gameplay at TopGolf is fast-paced, engaging, easy-to-learn, doesn’t require any gear rental or purchases, and – our favorite part – you don’t have to whisper. Plus, you have a dedicated server to order delicious drinks and food from whenever you want it. It’s actually meant to be a social affair, not a serious outing.
Each ball has a tracking chip in it, so instead of just seeing who can hit the ball the furthest, you also get points for sinking shots into the colored nets. There is also a game option similar to darts where you aim for certain colored nets at different times. Read about all the game options here.
Unlike normal golf, it is a year-round activity that can be done in cold or hot weather – thanks to the climate-controlled hitting bays. This is also a great date day or date night, since it is the perfect temperature during the day and the entire range is lit up at night!
There are more than 50 TopGolf locations currently open in the U.S. and 10 listed as coming soon. They also have or are planning to open locations in the U.K., Canada, Mexico, Australia, and even the United Arab Emirates. Check this list for a TopGolf location near you. Each location has its own page with venue details, pricing, hours, menus, and TopGolf deals.
Locations differ by what other games and amenities they have. The TopGolf in Vegas (located in the MGM Grand), for example, even has two pools and a concert venue.
TopGolf has also rolled out ‘Swing Suite’ – an extension that offers a simulated experience using a large screen in a luxury suite. These are offered in 34 (and counting) hospitality and entertainment venues across the country. Plus, one in Canada! These are in arenas, hotels, restaurants, and other venues. Of course, in typical TopGolf style, you can pick from multiple types of games (including other sports), and order food and drinks as well.
Also, check out these new TopGolf Crush events happening at various stadiums across the U.S. However, keep in mind tickets are about double per hour per person.
We really love TopGolf’s pricing model. It is set up similarly to what they do at a lot of bowling alleys. The fee is per hitting bay per hour, not per person. And if you have a flexible schedule, then you are in luck! Because the prices vary depending on how busy the time you plan to visit is.
Here are the current TopGolf prices
First of all, you’ll need a $5 membership card to play. However, they usually let everyone play on the same card, if you aren’t concerned with tracking your points. It is also a lifetime membership and is accepted at most other locations.
Rates per bay for up to six people:
- $26 per hour from 10 a.m. to noon
- $36 per hour from noon to 5 p.m.
- $46 per hour from 5 p.m. to close Sunday-Thursday
- $50 per hour from 5 p.m. to close Friday & Saturday
Note: These are as of July 2019 in Denver, CO. Be sure to check your TopGolf location as it may be different.
TopGolf Deals & Ways to Save
Make it a Group Date.
Obviously, one of the easiest ways to save on TopGolf is to split the cost with other people. If you have two other couples with you (hitting the max of six people per lane), you can end up paying less than $10 per couple! Plus, you’ll have another person to take cute pics of the two of you, so you can both be in the shot. This is such a fun group date spot!
Another pretty obvious tip is to just go early, since prices go up after noon. They even have breakfast options on weekdays and brunch on the weekends.
Go on a Tuesday for HALF OFF!
This is our favorite way to save. And it’s currently available at all locations except Vegas. Half Price Tuesday means half off games all day! So, you could potentially play for an hour for less than $15 if you go in the morning. Less if you make it a group date! Cheers to that, right?
Use Your Military Discount.
On the TopGolf website, they mention this policy: “Heroes discount of 10% off Topgolf game play is honored for military (active duty and veterans), police, fire and EMS personnel with valid I.D.”
If You’re a Teacher, Go on Mondays!
In summer 2019, teachers are being offered a great BOGO TopGolf deal! For ‘Teacher Mondays‘ they are offering “buy one hour of game play, get one free for teachers and up to five friends, all summer long.” The deal may differ slightly at your location, so check first. Good until August 26, 2019.
Share to Save on Friday & Saturday Nights
Have a party of four or less? Share your bay with strangers to take advantage of this unique Bay Share TopGolf deal. It’s like the TopGolf version of those communal beer hall tables in Germany!
On Friday and Saturday nights after 7 p.m., you can share your bay and get a discounted rate of only $20 per person for two hours of game play. Seeing that you’d pay $100 for two hours for your own bay just for two, paying $40 instead is a pretty good deal. Bring on the stranger danger! It’s like a blind group date.
Oh, and it’s only available for 18+ because TopGolf loves you. Just be sure to check that your location participates before planning for this.
Take Advantage of College Night, if You Can!
This promo has us wanting to go back to school. Every Wednesday night, TopGolf offers a $15 cover per student from 8-11 p.m. as part of their College Night promo. This gets you unlimited game play, plus food and drink specials. They even section off an area just for college students! Reservations not taken. And, obviously, they are going to ask to see your student ID. Specials also vary by location, and Vegas is again not hopping on this promo bus.
Share a Carafe, Pitcher, or ‘Golfbag.’
From our research, TopGolf does not have happy hour drink or food specials. Womp womp. But, if you are both drinking the same thing, be sure to take advantage of the savings buying in bulk can give you! They also currently have an offer for six beers in a bucket (mix and match) that comes out to less than $5 per beer. Which really isn’t bad for this kind of venue. They also have cocktails in take-home ‘Golfbag’ cups that are meant to be shared by two people and can save you a few bucks. There are also some nice outdoor patio and bar areas to enjoy before or after your game!
Final TopGolf Date Tips
Compile Your Savings.
So, if you are really looking to save, get a group of three couples together and go early on a Tuesday. Share a pitcher or bucket of beer and some apps if you want. Or get something cheap on the way and opt for water if you are really trying to cut costs. Of course, this cheap plan needs to be a mutual decision – so, not the best idea for a first date. More of a budget date idea for a long-time couple who are planning finances together …
Reserve a Bay.
This place can get super busy. Be sure to reserve a bay online, so that you aren’t stuck waiting. Luckily, if you forget, there is a bar as well. The easiest way to make a reservation is using the TopGolf app. You can also track your scores and change the tv channel with that thing, too!
Also, be sure to request a good bay! The middle of one of the top floors is ideal for easy hitting. If you are too far to one side, it is more challenging and being up high makes gravity give you some extra help. But, you’ll still have fun anywhere you end up!
Pick the Right Bay Mates.
If planning a TopGolf group date, pick the other couples carefully. You don’t want to invite that friend that will get so drunk they fall off the platform. Or that overly competitive one that will make it into a bloody battle for the TopGolf throne. When in doubt, leave them out. It’s your date, after all!
Otherwise, just have fun on your date, make sure you aren’t taking it too seriously, make a move to ‘help’ your significant other improve their swing, and don’t forget to take advantage of these awesome TopGolf deals!
