Of course, we love us some SUP boards for a chill day on the water. But when you are on a budget and don’t own your own watercraft, renting a tandem kayak is really the best option for a budget date out on the water. And it is a total blast to get to paddle together!
The cost of a two-person kayak is usually only slightly more than a single kayak or stand-up paddleboard. And if you happen to find a place with a day rate, you are really set for budget date success! It’s a great outdoorsy date idea for any couples who love to get outside together.

First-Timer Tandem Kayaking Tips
Beware of the sun.
If going out in the heat of the day, be sure to try to find a shaded area or bring plenty of sun protection – sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, protectant clothing, etc.
Bring snacks, water, & a dry bag.
If you plan to be out for multiple hours (which is really the best way to get the most of your money), you’ll need provisions. In many places, you can dock the boat and have a little picnic! Many rental companies will also include a dry bag with the kayak rental for your belongings. If not, you may want to consider renting one separately, depending on what you are bringing along for your ride. And a waterproof camera won’t hurt either! 😉
Know where to go.
While some places, like small lakes and short rivers, will be almost impossible to get lost in, others can be far more complicated. Make sure you know where you are going, bring a map or GPS if needed, and pay attention to your surroundings. A great tandem kayaking date day can go horribly wrong if you get super lost or end up in a more dangerous rapid area.
Follow the rules.
Depending on where you go on your kayaking date, you may not be able to dock the boat or you may be required to wear a life vest, etc. Be sure to know the rules of the area and follow them for your safety and to avoid being fined.
Paddle like a pro.
While it may be tempting to lean back and let your partner paddle you around, kayaking as a team is a blast! Be sure you get a short tutorial from the company you are kayaking with to get the most from your efforts. However, a few basics to know are that the stronger paddler sits in the back and you’ll want to paddle in unison.
So, wanna grab your partner and go paddle now? If you already love hopping in a tandem kayak together, where’s your favorite spot to get in the water?
